lyrics

Hope lost her lease last week
So she’s gotta’ find a place to stay
Classifieds and rental guides
Won’t help her find her way
She’d stay with family, she’d stay with friends
But they’re all getting kicked out, too
Hope’s gotta’ find a brand new job
And jump in the welfare queue

The new neighbors complain about the noise
Hope makes on her way out
She wanders about aimlessly
As her troubles start to mount
Her tears flow like bitter rain
As she wanders through the streets
He heart broke, her eyes cast down
She staggers in defeat

‘Cos colored folk don’t come out any more
And they feel feared when they do
Natives become strangers in their land
And their homes are missing, too
The jobs all went to overseas
But the jobless can’t pay the rent
The ‘hood turns into suburbia
Where the new-rich spend and spend

The shelters are all overcrowded
And the wages stay too low
The church doors close for the final time
Hope says it’s time to go
She takes the train to who knows where
All her memories in her hands
The Devil licks his lips and sneers
Hope has now left these lands.
